Wagering — also called playthrough or rollover — is the amount you have to stake before bonus funds or free-spin winnings become ordinary, withdrawable money. A 45x requirement means the qualifying balance must be staked forty-five times over. Crucially, that is turnover, not loss: every spin you play recycles part of the same money back into the count.

Two details decide whether a wagering requirement is realistic or theatrical:

• What the multiplier applies to. On a no-deposit free-spins offer it is usually the winnings from the spins, not the notional value of the spins themselves. Thirty spins that return a small win create a small wagering target; a lucky hit creates a large one.
• Which games count. Weighting tables commonly credit pokies at 100 per cent and table games at a fraction — often near zero for live blackjack and roulette. Play a zero-weighted game and the requirement does not move at all, no matter how much you stake.

There is also usually a cap on how much you may bet per spin while a bonus is active. 1. Find the wagering multiplier and what it multiplies

2. Find the maximum bet and the maximum cashout

   These two lines cause more voided bonuses than anything else. A cashout cap turns a big win into a modest one; a bet cap turns an ordinary spin into a breach.

3. Find the clock

   Free spins usually expire in days, and the wagering window afterwards is separate. Both clocks run whether or not you log in.

4. Find the game weighting table

   It is normally a link rather than a paragraph. Open it. If your favourite game contributes ten per cent, your real requirement is ten times worse than the headline.

5. Decide before you opt in, not after

   Most platforms will not let you decline a bonus retrospectively once it is attached to a deposit. Opting out at the cashier is a legitimate choice — plain cash has no strings.
